Facebook Is Where Great House Sits Begin

For many Australians, Facebook has become the place where house sits begin. Every day in the House Sitting Australia group I see homeowners looking for someone to care for their home and pets while they're away. Sometimes the first replies arrive within minutes. Friends tag people they know, experienced sitters introduce themselves, private messages start arriving, and before long there are conversations happening in every direction.

It's one of the reasons our community has grown to more than 136,000 members. Facebook is exceptionally good at bringing people together, and I honestly believe thousands of successful house sits have started with nothing more than a simple post and a friendly conversation. Finding people has never really been the difficult part. Choosing between them is where things become much more interesting.

The Excitement of the First Great Applicant

I've watched the same pattern unfold countless times over the years. Someone comments almost immediately, they sound friendly, they have experience, they love animals and after exchanging a few messages you start thinking, "I think we've found our sitter."

It's a perfectly natural reaction. Once you feel comfortable with someone it's tempting to stop looking and lock everything in. The only problem is that Facebook doesn't stop. More comments arrive, more recommendations appear and more private messages land in your inbox. Suddenly there are half a dozen genuinely good applicants, all with different backgrounds and different strengths.

Most of the time your original choice will still be an excellent one. Occasionally, though, someone who commented later turns out to have exactly the experience you were hoping for. They may have cared for elderly pets, managed acreage before, or have glowing references from people you already know. If you've already committed, you've lost the opportunity to compare them properly.

You're Choosing Someone to Live in Your Home

Every house sit is different because every home and every family is different. One homeowner may simply need someone to feed a cat and collect the mail, while another is looking after horses, maintaining a large garden or caring for an elderly dog with medication. The right sitter for one home isn't necessarily the right sitter for another.

That's why I always encourage people to slow down a little. Talk with several applicants, ask plenty of questions and check their references before making a final decision. You're not interviewing someone for a job, you're inviting them to live in your home and care for the animals you love. Spending another day or two making that decision is rarely time wasted.

Facebook Does Its Job Exceptionally Well

People sometimes ask me why I decided to build House Sitting Australia when the Facebook group already works so well. It's a fair question because Facebook has become one of the best places in Australia for homeowners and sitters to discover each other.

The answer is that Facebook was never designed to manage the next stage of the process. Once you have comments, Messenger conversations and perhaps emails arriving as well, it becomes surprisingly difficult to remember who said what. You start scrolling back through conversations trying to find the person with police checks, or the couple travelling with a caravan, or the sitter who had experience with diabetic pets. Facebook is brilliant at introductions, but it isn't designed to help you compare applicants side by side.

Turning Conversations Into Good Decisions

That's where House Sitting Australia fits into the picture. Once you've identified the people you'd genuinely like to consider, you can invite them to apply through your HSA listing. Instead of information being scattered across Facebook comments and Messenger, everything is brought together in one place where it's much easier to compare profiles, keep notes, check references and complete a Digital House Sitting Agreement if you decide to proceed.

It's a simple workflow that combines the strengths of both platforms, and in my experience it's one of the easiest ways to give yourself the best chance of finding the right person for your home, your pets and your peace of mind.
